Inspecting Combustion Chambers: MOOG Pieper Presents a New Security Solution for Blast Furnaces

MOOG Pieper, a provider of industrial video and security systems, is presenting a mobile inspection system for high-temperature environments where temperatures reach up to 2,400°C. The solution – MIS-N-HT – is particularly suitable for temporarily observing processes in the combustion chamber, such as the refractory lining inspection.
A multitude of critical processes take place in combustion chambers. Unplanned outages in furnaces are very costly, especially in the glass industry. But product quality and plant utilization are both key factors for manufacturing companies if they are to remain competitive. Focused inspection and process monitoring systems play a pivotal role in observing these processes. The Schwerte-based company has now developed a new, mobile system for process monitoring in combustion chambers for high-temperature environments. The inspection system is suitable for inspecting the likes of the refractory lining following maintenance. Another potential application is flame pattern observation during furnace parameterization.
Plug & Play Technology Permits Flexible Use
Operators can choose between an axial or radial probe to examine every angle of furnaces or combustion chambers. Special plug-in connectors mean that they can switch between the two probes as required. Also, a connection to the control system or measurement analysis systems (IBA) can be established quickly and easily. The causes of errors can be determined and eliminated swiftly by synchronously recording process and video data, so unintentional maintenance can be avoided and the machines can be put to better use.
Another advantage of the MIS-N-HT is that it can be used flexibly within an extremely wide range of production areas or even plants. Since the entire system is housed on a rollable transport trolley, none of the components need to be stored externally. Due to the solution’s compactness and mobility, and its potential uses in several locations, companies benefit from a faster return on investment.
Transportable Entire System with Full HD Resolution
The MIS-N-HT solution features two furnace probes (76 mm radial or axial, 1,700 mm or 1200 mm long) and a media control cabinet with monitoring elements for cooling water and compressed air. They trigger an optical and acoustic alarm if the probe fails or is rendered defective due to overheating, for example. This ensures faultless operation even in dusty, industrial high-temperature environments.
The full HD camera image is recorded and displayed on a 15.6” notebook, which can be used to conduct analyses on site using video management software. Alternatively, recorded sequences can be exported to a common video format (such as MPEG-4) for subsequent analysis and protected against overwriting.
